Reptiles: Crocodiles, Snakes, Lizards and Turtles
Introduction
The class of reptiles can be subdivided into three main orders according to specific physical characteristics.
Chelonian
Also called testudines, are the reptiles that have carapace. The body of these reptiles is embedded in an oval shell composed of a dorsal part (carapace) and another ventral (plastron). There are about three hundred species of turtles, inhabiting rivers, oceans and rainforests.

Lacertids and Ophids
They are species of reptiles that have their bodies covered by scales. They are found on all continents except Antarctica.
Examples of Lacertids:
- Chameleons
- Lizards
- Geckos
Examples of offenses:
- Scaly snakes (sucuri, boa constrictor, false coral, true coral, jararaca and rattlesnake).

Crocodilians
They are reptiles that have body lining composed of thick skin and the presence of horny plaques. Crocodilians differ from other reptiles by the circulatory system (three-chambered heart). They inhabit swampy areas and banks of rivers and lakes. They appeared on the planet at the end of the Cretaceous, around 85 million ago.

Curiosity:
- The largest reptile in the world is the saltwater crocodile, also known as the sea crocodile. They live off the coast of the Pacific and Indian oceans. An adult male can measure up to 7 meters in length.
